The first settlers arrived here in 421 AD, after trying to escape the barbarian invasions of Venice and in the ninth century , the small island became densely populated and has grown in importance. When bubonic plague struck Venice in 1348 , Lazzarettos ( quarantine) have been established in many small islands, including Poveglia to try to contain the pandemic.
