Top 5 tourist places in kerala

A lot of travel guides promise “something for everyone,” but Kerala actually pulls it off. In a single week, you can freeze your fingers around a hot glass of spiced tea in misty mountains, drift past paddy fields on a wooden houseboat, wander through 500-year-old colonial alleys, and end up eating grilled snapper on the beach at sunset.

If you’re trying to build an itinerary without losing your mind to travel logistics, start with these five spots. Each covers a completely different facet of the state.

1. Munnar: Tea Estates and Crisp Mountain Air

Munnar
Munnar

The drive up to Munnar is half the experience: the air noticeably cools, the roadside turns dense with fern trees, and suddenly every hillside is manicured with bright green tea bushes rolling into the fog.

  • The vibe: Chilly, slow-paced, and wildly scenic.

  • Top experiences: Skip rushing through ten viewpoints; just wake up early to walk through the tea trails before the tour buses arrive. Hit Eravikulam National Park to spot the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, and check out Attukal Waterfalls after a rain.

  • Best for: Couples, landscape photographers, and anyone desperate to escape the plains’ heat.

2. Wayanad: Waterfalls, Caves, and Coffee Country

Tucked up in the north-eastern hills, Wayanad feels rugged and wild compared to Munnar’s manicured charm. It’s an enormous district of spice plantations, dense forests, and ancient sites.

  • The vibe: Earthy, adventurous, and remote.

  • Top experiences: Trek up Chembra Peak to see the heart-shaped lake, explore the prehistoric petroglyphs carved inside Edakkal Caves, and take a bamboo raft across Kuruva Island.

  • Best for: Trekkers, road-trippers from Bengaluru, and anyone who prefers deep forest over polished resorts.

3. Kochi: Art Cafés, Spice Markets, and Living History

Kochi—specifically the old quarters of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry—is the cultural anchor of Kerala. Portuguese traders, Dutch settlers, British officials, and Arab merchants all left their fingerprints here over hundreds of years.

  • The vibe: Historic, creative, and walkable.

  • Top experiences: Watch local fishermen operate the massive cantilevered Chinese fishing nets at dusk, wander the antique shops of Jew Town, explore the murals at Mattancherry Palace, and hang out in the breezy art cafés.

  • Best for: Food lovers, history buffs, and culture nerds.

4. Alleppey (Alappuzha): The Classic Backwaters

Alappuzha

Alleppey is a labyrinth of palm-fringed canals, brackish lagoons, and wide-open lakes where daily life happens entirely on the water: school kids catch ferries, vendors paddle canoes, and locals fish along the banks.

  • The vibe: Tranquil, slow-motion countryside living.

  • Top experiences: Book a traditional kettuvallam (thatched houseboat) for an overnight cruise, or rent a local canoe for a couple of hours to navigate the narrow canals houseboats can’t squeeze into. Don’t skip the fresh Karimeen Pollichathu (pearl spot fish wrapped in banana leaf) cooked on board.

  • Best for: Honeymooners, relaxed family groups, and slow travellers.

5. Kovalam: Rocky Coves and Arabian Sea Sunsets

Down in south Kerala, Kovalam is a classic beach strip built around three crescent-shaped bays. The most famous, Lighthouse Beach, is bookended by a red-and-white striped lighthouse perched right over the rocks.

  • The vibe: Laid-back coastal holiday.

  • Top experiences: Climb the spiral staircase of the 1970s lighthouse for panoramic sea views, spend an afternoon idling on a beach recliner with fresh coconut water, and take an evening walk through the cliff-side shack restaurants.

  • Best for: Beach bums, seafood enthusiasts, and winding down at the end of a packed tour.

Planning Your Route: How to Match the Stops

Don’t try to cram all five into one week—Kerala looks narrow on a map, but winding mountain roads make transit much slower than you’d expect.

Trip Length Realistic Route What It Covers
5–6 Days Kochi $\rightarrow$ Munnar $\rightarrow$ Alleppey History, cold mountains, and backwaters
7–9 Days Kochi $\rightarrow$ Munnar $\rightarrow$ Alleppey $\rightarrow$ Kovalam Full south-central circuit plus beach time
Weekend / 4 Days Wayanad (via Calicut) Standalone northern wilderness trip

When to Go

  • October to March: Peak travel season. Dry, cool in the hills, and warm on the coast.

  • June to August (Monsoon): Heavy rains that shut down some water activities, but the forests explode into neon green, rates drop, and it’s the best season for traditional Ayurvedic therapies.

Give yourself enough breathing room between transfers. In Kerala, a random roadside stall serving hot parottas and black tea often turns out to be the best stop of the day.
